Bago nag-artista si Ric Rodrigo, naglingkod muna bilang production manager ng American Biscuit Company. Nadiskubre ni Rafael Anton Lebran, produsyer ng Lebran Productions, bilang artista. Sa pangalang Ricardo Montes, unang gumanap sa “Song of Sto. Tomas” ng Lebran noong 1951. Ang unang pelikulang Tagalog na ginampanan ay ang “Reyna Bandida” ng Sampaguita Pictures. Ipinakilala sa “Inspirasyon” at naging full-fledged star sa “Pilya” bilang kabituin ni Gloria Romero.
